TROUBLE SHOOTING SAMSUNG WASHING MACHINE WA400PJHDWR/AA Odor
Important: If the odor seems to be a burning smell from a mechanical or electrical component, you need to get your washer serviced. Unplug the washer, and then click the “Create Online Service Request” button below to initiate the service process.
When moisture is trapped in a dark place, it promotes the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew that cause unpleasant odors. This can happen anywhere and in any space that seals in moisture. For this reason, preventative maintenance is required on all front load washers across the market.
To prevent and eliminate odor(s) in the washing machine, perform/verify the following:
- Level the washer – Water and laundry additives do not drain properly when the washer is not leveled. For instructions for leveling the washer, click here.
- Clean the debris filter – The debris filter should be cleaned periodically to prevent odor, draining, no filling, and leakage issues. For the instructions on how to clean the debris filter, click here.
- Run a Pure Cycle – Pure Cycle is a specially designed cycle that targets the outer tub of the washing machine, which is the source of a lot of odors.
Warning: Never run Pure Cycle with anything in the tub as this can damage the washer.
- Avoid using more than the manufacturer’s recommended amount of Detergent and Softener. - Overuse of detergent and softenter, wastes money, causes soap scum buildup in the outer tub, and causes unpleasant odors. For steps on how to remove built up soap scum in the outer tub, click here.
- Do not over load the washer – An overloaded washer does not remove the proper amount of moisture from the clothes. The excess moisture remains in the bottom of the drum, causing odors. In general, the washer is overloaded if the drum is unbalanced when it spins or clothes are soaking wet after the final spin cycle.
- Do some spot cleaning – After each wash cycle, take a minute or so to wipe out the detergent drawer, wipe off the drum and door seal with a clean, dry cloth, leave the door and the detergent drawer slightly cracked open to allow the washer to air out.
Note: Periodically, the detergent drawer will need a thorough cleaning. The amount of detergent buildup will determine how often the drawer needs to be cleaned. For steps on How To Clean the Detergent Drawer, click here.
- Do not let wet clothes sit in the washer – Clothes that sit in the washer for a long time after a wash cycle has finished redeposit moisture into the washing machine. For this reason, avoid leaving clothes in the washer after the final spin cycle has completed.
- Run a Sanitize cycle – With no laundry in the washer using hot water and bleach, run a Sanitize cycle.
Tips:
- When running the Sanitize cycle, you can add up to 6 cups of distilled white vinegar or bleach directly into the tub to assist in eliminating odors. You may have to run a few cycles to remove the odor from your machine.
- Also try odor eliminating agents like Tide® Washing Machine Cleaner following that manufactures directions.
- Run a Silver Care cycle – With no laundry in the washer, run a complete Silver Care cycle. This will remove bacteria from the washer.
